While billions of people are quarantined at home, while on our balconies we sing and clap to thank the healthcare professionals and the active workers in the current crisis situation and with great despair, we empathize with the deaths of those who have not been able to resist the virus, we realize that the survival of our Mother Europe is in danger.  Continuer de lire « Towards the end of the European dream? »

Does the European Union educate generations into being united in diversity ?

This year, we have celebrated the Erasmus program’s 30th birthday. It is largely considered as one of the most successful and profitable policies that the Union has implemented. Allowing students and young professionals to study and work in the countries of the Union, with financial help, in the name of their European citizenship, or of the partner nations’, it is considered both a very efficient educational tool and a very effective integration mechanism. It also is symptomatic of what the Union has been trying to do in the field of education : harmonize and enable the young Europeans to have their skills and diplomas recognized throughout Europe. This work is in the vein of the will of free movement of the workers stated in the Treaty of Rome signed 60 years ago.

Refugees : an asset for western economies

Today with rising populism all over the world, it seems that migrants are not welcome everywhere. Populist leaders are constructing their speeches against refugees making them responsible for the crisis, for taking jobs while natives are unemployed. It has been seen all over Europe, very recently in the Netherlands with Geert Wilders, in Great Britain with Nigel Farage, in France with Marine Le Pen and in the United States, with Trump declaring, “ »When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best (…). They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists”.
